Historical Context for The Fellowship of Hearts On Fire

A heart set free is a heart set on fire for Christ. Richard Halverson is a great example of a heart set on fire for Jesus Christ. For twenty years, Richard Halverson had no interest in God. In fact, he aspired to success in the field of entertainment. At the age of 19, he went to Hollywood. After six months of careless living and financial difficulty, he went to a nearby church looking for answers. Three months later he became a Christian. Through his new relationship with Christ, his ambitions changed and he realized that God had a definite plan for his life involving evangelism, missions, or pastor of a church. His heart was now "set free." Following a profound surrender to Christ at Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center, Halverson attended seminary at Wheaton College, and then pastored a church in Coalinga, California. There in Coalinga, he was brought by the Holy Spirit to a deeper commitment to Christ and a willingness to live in obscurity if that was what the Lord desired.

One month later, Halverson attended a training conference at the Forest Home Christian Conference Center in the San Bernardino mountains. Following an evening meeting, he made his way back to his cabin, passing the cabin of Henrietta Mears, founder of Forest Home. Though her cabin was darkened, he realized some inside were praying. “I was strangely constrained to enter and pray…so I opened the door, crossed the room through the darkness…I began to pray, others followed, and God came down into that cabin.” There was weeping and laughter, much talking and planning, God laying a burden for the world on those souls. Halverson finally got back to his cabin in the middle of the night, sat down at his typewriter, and wrote what later became known as the four commitments of The Fellowship Of The Burning Heart. The four commitments encompassed the essentials of a dedicated Christian life: devotion, holiness, evangelism, and surrender. Richard Halverson sealed these commitments with the statement: “God being my guide I desire to make these commitments to HIM.” Halverson shared these commitments with Henrietta Mears and those who had attended the cabin prayer session, thus forming The Fellowship Of The Burning Heart for that era. Oh, how the Lord used Richard Halverson. He became pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland and later became Chaplain of the United States Senate from 1981-1994. His love for Jesus Christ became known to the world. He once said, “Jesus Christ is God’s everything for man’s total need.” That is the statement of one whose heart is on fire for Jesus Christ. May his tribe increase.

Another vital response to God, essential to your spiritual growth, is to form resolves and convictions based on what you see in His Word. Once you have matched your life to what you see in the mirror of God's Word, decide what you're going to do about it. . . . If you examine the Psalms of David, you will notice that he often formed resolves and convictions. He spent considerable time restating what he knew to be true about God. . . . Forming a conviction simply means that you look at God and His Word and say, "Because of what I see and know to be true, I will do this...or I won't do that..." Some would say that's legalism, but it's not. It's love - love for God Himself.

I wonder if you who are reading these words today would be willing to say “yes” to the commitment of a burning heart, one whose heart is in love with Jesus Christ and “on fire” for Him? If you are willing to say “yes” to the Lord, then join me in a new fellowship, The Fellowship Of Hearts On Fire. Your commitment to a heart on fire is a purposeful yielding of yourself to your Lord and includes quiet time, living by God’s Word, holy living, sharing Christ with others in His power, and abandonment to the will of God as His disciple. It is a radical commitment to intimacy with God, the authority of God’s Word, personal revival, the power of the Holy Spirit, and discipleship by Christ Himself. This commitment is made out of love for Him because you belong to God through faith in Christ. Are you willing to be led and taught by your Lord through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in you? You and I will still sin and go the wrong way at times. But our Lord is faithful to show us our sin, and will lead and guide us in life. Ruth Paxson says, “It is not in order to be His, but because we are His that we yield our lives to Him. Purchase gives title to property, but it is only delivery that gives possession.” The commitment to a heart on fire is the resolve that the Lord will have possession of what He gave His life for: you and me.

"God's plan for you will involve the difficult, the painful, and even the improbable. But always remember, God is not counting on your limited strength and resources but on His own power and sufficiency. The secret is to run to God and depend on the power of the Holy Spirit." - Catherine Martin

Friends, as far back as 2003, when I wrote A Heart On Fire, a book of quiet times about the priceless privilege of knowing Christ, I titled the very first chapter, 'The Burning Heart.' The idea of a heart burning for Jesus Christ has been a compelling one for me perhaps my whole life. It signifies a life of dedication and commitment in the name of our precious Savior. As I began writing Set My Heart On Fire, I found myself returning again and again to this 'burning' fellowship with Jesus, enabled by The Holy Spirit. One early morning in my quiet time, I penned out five commitments covering quiet time, the Bible, personal revival, the power of the Holy Spirit, and radical discipleship. These commitments are for a 'burning heart' fellowship for a new era, The Fellowship of Hearts On Fire. It is a fellowship to be sure. But there are no membership cards, no mailing lists, no meetings, no dues, and no public contracts. Yes, there is an unspoken 'fellowship' of the saints with one another, but this is a higher fellowship with God Himself. This is an opportunity for you, privately and personally, to turn your life over to Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Dear friend, I invite you to sign these commitments included both in Set Heart On Fire, A 30-Day Journey book, and in the 'Fellowship of Hearts On Fire ~ Dedication Pages' for The Quiet Time Notebook™. They will be your private testimony to the fire the Lord is causing to burn in your heart. Together, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be part of The Fellowship Of Hearts On Fire. I cannot wait to see what God is going to accomplish through the lives of those of us in this fellowship.

Dear Friend, let’s join together in this Fellowship of Hearts On Fire as those who desire to be sold out for Christ, wholeheartedly committed to Him, and living for Him as long as we have breath. Making these commitments is a decisive resolve to give ourselves to God, knowing that “the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His” (2 Chronicles 16:9). May our God “count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12).
